Simon Jersey, official supplier to Team GB, is giving the UK’s youth the chance to have their messages of good luck featured in the athletes’ suits for the Olympic Games with its new competition, #myOlympicwish.
Launched by gymnast, Beth Tweddle, and school children from Altham Primary School at the Accrington offices of Simon Jersey, #myOlympicwish invites young people to send in messages of support that will be woven into the lining of suits being designed by Simon Jersey for athletes to wear to all formal events in Rio and the UK. This will include the Team GB Reception that will be hosted in Rio in advance of the Opening Ceremony.
A selection of the messages entered in the competition will be used within the suits to help give athletes an extra boost. Tweddle, who competed in three Olympics Games, will use her experience of preparing for an Olympic Games to help judge the entries alongside Simon Jersey and Team GB officials.
She commented: “As an athlete, particularly at an away Games – it gives you a huge boost to know that the nation is behind you and having the messages inside the suits will make sure athletes feel the support of everyone back home. I’m really looking forward to seeing what young people come up with and the good wishes that will help inspire our team.”
The young people who write the winning messages will receive a framed sample of the finished fabric, plus the chance to meet athletes wearing the finished suits next year.
James Saunders, Simon Jersey managing director, said: “We really wanted young people to be able to contribute to the design of the suits and to let the athletes know they’re supporting them.
“From urging athletes to run faster to letting them know how much support they have at home, we’d like to include wishes that show the enthusiasm of the nation’s youth. We’ll include as many messages as we can in the lining of the suits which will be unveiled early in 2016.”
#myOlympicwish is open to young people aged 16 or under, with permission from a parent or guardian. To send their message of support, in 20 words or less, the applicants should visit Simonjersey.com/myolympicwish and submit before 23:59pm on Friday 1st May 2015.
