A healthy approach

It is estimated that sickness absence costs uk businesses around £13.4 billion each year.

By far the most common form of absence is short-term sickness. So, what can you do to improve the attendance of your employees?

  • If someone is off sick they should contact the salon manager before the time they normally start work. This shouldn’t be by text, but by phone, so the salon manager can check if there are any concerns about the illness.
  • If they return within seven days they should fill in a Self Certificate Form, which gives details of their sickness, but if they are absent for seven days or more you should receive a Statement of Fitness for Work.
  • Hold a return to work interview with employees after every period of absence, even if the absence was only for one day. Where you have concerns about an employee’s absence level you should raise this too.
  • Involve the employee in identifying ways of improving their attendance. Provide clear targets and timescales for improvement and monitor progress.
  • Don’t be afraid to start disciplinary action if attendance doesn’t improve and there is an impact on potential lost business.
