Alex Thaddeus Top Five Tips for Maintaining Healthy Hair

As we transition into the winter months our hair becomes more susceptible to damage from the elements, the cold conditions can often cause the hair to become dry and more prone to breakage. We caught up with Alex Thaddeus, stylist and owner of Alex Thaddeus Hairdressing to hear what her top tips are for helping your clients maintain healthy hair in the colder months.

1.Massage the scalp during the shampoo process

The scalp should be massaged during the shampooing process as this helps boost the scalp’s blood circulation and deliver all the good nutrients to the hair follicles while helping to break down stubborn product build-up that can occur over time. Product build up can cause scalp irritation and blocked follicles, by massaging the scalp you can also help to evenly distribute the hair’s natural oils that keep the hair nice and healthy.

  1. Advising our clients to pay attention to their individual hair and scalp needs is important

Nobody’s hair is the same, and therefore, neither should the hair-washing schedule, there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ hair-care routine. We should advise clients to wash their hair in accordance with their individual oil production, exercise and lifestyle, this is also entirely dependant on their individual hair type Over-washing can strip the scalp’s natural oils and lead to diminished hair condition, we should advise clients to tailor a routine that works best for them.

  1. Recommend scalp scrubbing

This is a great treatment for the follicles and skin on the scalp and with the wide range of products available today, it’s never been so easy. It’s a great step to add to your hair care routine either once, or twice a week, depending on product usage to help remove excess product buildup on the scalp, lifting any dead skin cells suffocating the skins oxygen levels. This will boost the hair growth from a healthy cleansed scalp.

  1. We should educate our client to feed their hair from the “inside out”.

Having a well-rounded and nutritious diet is vital to improving skin and hair health, and the skin on your scalp is no different. If a client comes to you asking for help in improving scalp health, we should advise them to prioritise eating healthy fatty acids, proteins, iron, zinc minerals and lots of vitamins for improving the scalps health. In addition to this, ensuring their body’s blood levels are sufficient in B12 and iron are important. Staying hydrated is essential to maintain the skin’s moisture and avoid any unwanted scalp dryness.

  1. Advising our clients to avoid keeping their hair in damp atmospheres for long periods of time

Advising our clients to avoid keeping their hair in damp atmospheres for long periods of time is advisable as a wet or damp scalp puts the scalp’s pH levels into overdrive and can become a breeding ground for bad bacteria. Which can, in turn lead to scalp infections, hair breakage, moisture overload and damage to the hair follicles and the overall scalp’s health. Informing our clients of the effects that can occur from leaving their hair in wet styles for too long are important. Hair that is wrapped in a bun or tight to the scalp, are the most compromising to the scalp. Instead, recommend they blow dry the roots first on a gentle heat, or if they prefer to air-dry their hair, suggest they give themselves extra time to air dry fully before styling.
