Beyond Occlusion: A New Approach to Barrier Repair

Moving beyond conventional occlusion, Barrier Rescue provides immediate relief for extremely dry skin, with clinical proof of long-term barrier repair.

Worldwide, 1 September 2026 – For decades, an impaired skin barrier has largely relied on petrochemical-based occlusives such as petrolatum, mineral oil, and paraffin. These ingredients temporarily reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by forming a protective layer on the skin. While they provide immediate relief, they do not actively support the skin’s natural barrier repair processes, requiring regular reapplication to maintain their benefits.

As a pioneer in professional microbiome skincare, Esse believes barrier repair should go beyond occlusion. Barrier Rescue takes a biomimetic approach, combining skin-identical Ceramide NP and Castor Seed Oil with the world’s first COSMOS-certified, bio-based Propionic Acid, produced in partnership with a leading greentech company as a clean alternative to conventional petrochemical sources.

Propionic Acid supports microbiome balance, modulates inflammation, and strengthens barrier resilience.1–3 Together, these ingredients replenish the skin’s lipid matrix and help break the inflammation–dryness cycle.4–6

“Barrier dysfuncľion is rarely driven by a single facľor,” says Kyle Groenewald, Head of R&D aľ Esse Skincare. “Long-ľerm barrier repair requires supporľing ľhe microbiome, reducing inflammaľion, and replenishing skin-idenľical lipids, noľ simply relying on ľemporary occlusion.”

Barrier dysfunction is increasingly recognised as a contributing factor in persistent dryness, sensitivity, premature ageing, and impaired post-procedure recovery.7–9 In a four-week clinical study involving adults with dry and barrier-compromised skin, Barrier Rescue was clinically proven to improve skin barrier function, reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by 10.7% after 28 days*.

Unlike conventional TEWL testing, which measures water loss while a product is still on the skin, Esse measured skin at least 8 hours after the last application. The results demonstrate that Barrier Rescue helps skin function better on its own between applications, rather than simply creating a temporary barrier to water loss.

Barrier Rescue is available through Esse’s global network of authorised professional partners.
