BLOG: Bringing your brand to life – designing the perfect salon space for your business

Jamie Bell, managing director of Illuminated Mirrors, explains the importance of creating a salon presence that wows your clients.
If you’re thinking of opening a new beauty salon or just relocating your current business, your space should be welcoming and relaxing for your clients, as well as functional and well-thought-out in design. But perhaps more importantly, the look of your salon or spa should be unique to your brand and stand out from your competitors.
Whether it’s through a convenient location or quirky exterior, your environment should appeal to the clients you aim to target and give them faith that your brand understands and is passionate about beauty.
Ensure that your salon really embodies your brand by considering a few important aspects during the initial design stage…
The Location
What kind of clientele are you targeting? Once you’ve decided this, you can then choose the best way to approach factors such as location.
Do you run a nail bar offering quick manicures and pedicures to customers passing by on their lunch break? Then a central city spot close to corporate office blocks and public transport links would be a great location. Alternatively, a quiet spa retreat would be best placed in a picturesque countryside setting, out of the way of noisy main roads to let your customers really take time out to relax.
Your location often decides your clientele. If you already have a large base of regular customers, where possible ensure any moves you make are convenient for them. Similarly, take a look around and see where your competitors are located in the area- you don’t want to lose business to a salon which offers the same services close by.
Décor
The appearance of your salon can have a big impact on a client’s impression of your business. Make sure the décor reflects your brand image. Think about the colour scheme you’re using as well as the fixtures and fittings- do they represent your brand in the right way?
Decorate based on your clientele too. Choosing the right colours will play an important part in contributing to the mood and atmosphere you’re trying to achieve. Chic colour combinations like pink and grey will give a city beauty parlour an on-trend, vibrant feel whilst neutral whites and pale blues will bring a calming, refreshing energy to a health spa.
Accessibility
You’ll need to make sure that your salon is accessible for all- this includes adapting any entrances/ exits and facilities for disabled access.
Consider parking too. For city centre salons this isn’t such a crucial factor, but if you’re based away from any public transport links, a large car park to accommodate your clients is crucial. Signpost any car parking clearly to ensure visitors find what they’re looking for and don’t arrive at their appointment delayed or aggravated.
That little something extra
Consider what will really make your salon stand out from others. Whether it’s through stylish accessories like professional makeup mirrors, or going that extra mile for your customers by providing champagne and chocolates on special occasions (wedding days, birthdays etc.), make sure a visit to your salon is memorable for all the right reasons.
