British hairdressers get creative for HABB’s Helping Hairdressers Day

Richard Ward

The first ever Hairdressers Helping Hairdressers Day saw hair salons across the country take part in an exciting day of fundraising activities to raise funds for industry charity, HABB (Hair and Beauty Benevolent).

Fundraising initiatives ranged from dressing up days, to mad hair days, bake sales and salons donating a percentage of their takings or offering blow-dries in exchange for a donation towards the hairdressing industry’s own charity which provides financial help to hair and beauty professionals and former hair and beauty professionals.

The day was also supported by industry bodies and hairdressing businesses: ghd dedicated a week to supporting the cause with activities including a guess the baby competition and a worst hair-do competition, while the team at the National Hairdressers Federation all wore purple for the occasion.

Richard Ward Hair team members raised more than £2,500 with innovative ideas that ranged from a 24 hour colourathon to a social media amnesty, an evening soiree and walking 18.5 miles home after a busy Saturday in the salon. Neville Hair and Beauty in Knightsbridge donated £5 for each blow dry in their blow dry bar, while Boki’s Hair in London’s Herne Hill offered cupcakes, bubbly and hand massages in exchange for a donation.

Across the country, George’s Hairdressing in Leicester ran a competition to win a transformation with the purchase of a cupcake with proceeds going to HABB, Gloss Hairdressing in Knaresborough raised £192 by donating 50 per cent of product sales to the cause, and Staff at Q Hair and Beauty in Chichester dressed up as super heroes for the day.

“We were so humbled to see so many people embracing Hairdressers Helping Day with such a diverse range of fundraising activities. As well as all of the innovative fundraisers, HABB also received more donations by text message than ever before, which was fantastic,” said HABB president David Drew. “These funds will allow us to provide support to even more hairdressers who find themselves unable to work through ill-health or unforeseen circumstances.”
