Get the look: Katy Perry’s VMA’s red carpet hair

2014 MTV Video Music Awards - Arrivals
This weekend, Katy Perry attended the 2014 VMA’s with her hair styled in dramatic, voluminous waves and a thick fringe for a modern take on old Hollywood glamour.

Inspired by the star’s Versace gown and the iconic Versace girl, hair stylist, Clyde Haygood of The Magnetic Agency, created a glamorous yet classic style for the VMA winner, using the Paul Mitchell Neuro Unclipped Styling Rod.

Here, Haygood shares his step-by-step tips on how to create the look:

1.  Spray hair with Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger HydroMist Blow-Out Spray before blow drying to give hair volume and some support.

2. Working with 2” sections, spray Paul Mitchell Hot Off The Press thermal protectant spray to help protect hair from heat styling and continue to build the support system for the style to help the waves last, before curling each section.

3. To work with a fringe and long hair, aim to have the waves start in the middle (near the cheekbones) and cascade down. Achieve this by placing the barrel of the Paul Mitchell Neuro Unclipped Styling Rod against hair, wrap it around, then twist the hair, wrap it around the barrel, twist, and wrap it, for the length of the hair – the twisting and wrapping technique helps keep the waves full and glamorous vs. piecey or beach-like. Additionally, the straight shape of the Neuro Unclipped Rod is ideal for this look and technique, as it makes it easier to do and allows for a uniform shape.

4. Finally, spray hair with Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Shine Spray to give the hair and fringe a glossy shine and complete the look with Paul Mitchell Stay Strong Express Dry Strong Hold Hair Spray to keep the waves looking gorgeous and voluminous all night.
