Make a great start!

One of the most important aspects of a great salon service is the consultation.

A good consultation engages with the client and shows them that you are truly listening to their needs and requirements.

By following a few simple steps, you can achieve a great consultation every time…

  • Keep to the level of the client and make eye contact rather than standing over them and talking into the mirror.
  • When it’s a new client book in extra time for the consultation. This gives you time to build the relationship and understand their needs.
  • It’s not just asking questions that are important; it’s the type of question you ask that’s crucial. A question like “How do you feel about your hair at the moment?” can lead to a more meaningful discussion about your client’s hair.
  • Watching a client’s body language can give vital clues about them and help you with the service you offer. It’s no good suggesting bright red for a shy retiring type, and not suggesting change to a client who gets easily bored is a recipe to lose them.

Make sure all of your staff is offering a consultation this good every time, whether with a new or long standing client. It’s all too easy to lapse in to, “What are we doing, just a trim?”
