Shaping Futures ambassador, Janet Maitland, has announced the team who will be travelling to India next month to work with the children of Kolkata.

Shaping Futures is a social initiative launched by Schwarzkopf Professional in cooperation with SOS Children’s Villages, helping to transform the lives of young children around the world.

In her second year as ambassador for Shaping Futures, Maitland will be joined on the trip by two Schwarzkopf Professional technicians and a team of eight hairdressers. The group will provide a six-week intense training course supporting disadvantaged young people to learn hairdressing skills, in order to get a job and earn a living.

The 30 students will be taught how to cut, straighten, curl, style, perm and colour hair, and at the end of the course will be placed for apprenticeships within one of the large hairdressing chains in India.

Making up the team on this once-in-a-lifetime trip are Melenie Tudor of En Route Hair & Beauty, Nicole Parkes of Wish Hairdressing, Rizzo’s Margarita Halamenda, Sarah-Jane McBride of John Gillespie, The Hair Shop’s Sarah Franklin, and finally both Sarah Brown  and Anthony McMeiken of Janet Maitland Hair Excellence.

Maitland commented: “Being in the SOS Children’s Village makes you realise how important education is. I was looking for people who really wanted to make a difference, are good team leaders and who have compassion. We all try to support each other as much as possible as you definitely need a positive environment to work in. The team I’ve got this year are great, and I can’t wait to go over to India with them!”
