The Benefits of Compressed Styling

Time is of the essence behind the chair…we’re trying to get the color and cut just right, so sometimes we run out of time for that beautiful finish which is essential for showing off all the work we just did,” says Anna Peters, Sam Villa ArTeam and Owner of re:TREAT Color + Hair Design and StudioThat’s when compression styling can save the day…because a beautiful finish is not an extra step, it’s necessary for highlighting the cut and color.

Compressed styling uses larger sections, tension, heat and compression to create texture in a shorter amount of time.  It’s fast and a great technique to share with guests for at home styling.

How To: Compressed Styling – see technique here.

  1. Section head into 5 large vertical sections (2 on each side and one in the back). The side sections will be directed towards the face, and the back section will be neutral.
  2. Using vertical large sections, insert a Sam Villa Artist Series 2-in-1 Marcel Iron and Wand5” (color treated heat setting) close to the base with ample tension, turn section away from the face, drop the tip out and make a full rotation with the iron, hold to heat the section and pull through. Repeat this down the hair shaft.  The entire large section will then be tightly twisted (it’s fine if shorter layers stick out).
  3. Cold press down the entire section with cold plates of a Sam Villa SLEEKR Professional Flat Iron (not plugged in or turned on) to cool off and further compress the section to set the curl. Leave twisted until the entire head is set.
  4. Use a paddle brush to breakup the wave pattern and style.

This technique provides just enough natural texture to enhance the cut, highlight color and make your guest feel that you have given them a full salon experience with a beautiful finish,” adds Peters.
