The Importance of Education in Hair Salons

In my opinion, education is what holds the hairdressing industry together, it keeps team members updated on trends, sharpens their skills and knowledge and allows them to grow as individuals. Running my salon for over 20 years has allowed me watch members of my team join as apprentices and work their way up into the stylists they are today.

Client Safety

Client safety is an extremely important part of working in a salon as chemicals, heat and sharp tools can be dangerous if not used correctly. Education and training teach stylists how to use the products and equipment safely, maintain good hygiene and recognise potential risks such as allergic reactions. This can help prevent injuries, infection and damage to the client’s hair and scalp. Being properly educated also means stylists can give clients professional advice and know when a treatment may not be suitable for them. Overall, good education helps create a good environment and builds trust between the client and the stylist.

Keeping up with trends

Education plays an important role for stylists when it comes to keeping up with trends. Having the right training means stylists can learn new skills and stay up to date with the latest trends and techniques, meaning they can offer clients a wider range of services. Keeping up with fast-paced trends also allows stylists to stay creative and confident in their work which benefits the salon as clients are most likely to return to a salon that offers up to date services.

Career Progression

Career progression is another important reason why education is important in the hair industry and salons. Continuing to learn allows stylists to improve their knowledge, develop new techniques and gain further qualifications. This can lead to more opportunities in the industry such as progression into senior roles, management or becoming a specialist in a specific area. Education can also help stylists become more confident in their abilities and increase their chances of earning more and developing a successful and rewarding career.

Confidence and Creativity

Stylists need to feel confident and comfortable trying new techniques and creating different looks for their clients, another reason why education is so important. It gives stylists the knowledge and skills they need to work with confidence. Learning new methods can also encourage stylists to experiment with different colours, cutting techniques and express their creativity. The more experience and knowledge a stylist gains, the more confident they can become when making decisions and adapting their work to suit each client.
