It’s always helpful when a client brings in a reference photo to their appointment. You get to see an example of their hair goals, and this helps you to start the consultation process with a clear idea of what their desired outcome is. However, more often than not they are showing you a celebrity or well-known face with a full glam, red carpet look, with a lot of texturising and volumising products.

Begin by analysing the reference photo and understanding the vision. Then look closely at the celebrity’s natural hair texture, discussing how you can adapt the reference style and texture to suit the client’s own hair, whilst maintaining hair health. Explain thoroughly to the client how the look will appear on their hair, and what techniques you can use to visually replicate the looks. Cutting can help you replicate these along with styling products, translating the celebrity references into a reality.

The consultation process is very important, to ensure your client understands how you can and cannot replicate a reference image, dependant on their natural hair texture. Guiding the client through home styling to suit their specific hair will also help in bringing their hair vision to life between appointments.

Layers are a great way to add or remove texture, as it creates a dynamic movement by removing any weight in thicker textured hair, defining shape in curls or wavy hair texture, and it can even create volume in finer hair textures. This makes recreating celebrity hair textures more suitable to your client’s natural hair type.

Recreating sleek celebrity looks or volume blowouts can be subject to frizz in the good old UK climate, therefore, it is important to take products into consideration when you’re styling. It also must be noted that no client hair texture is the same, so I highly recommend giving specific hair care advice to your clients to maintain their hair in between appointments.
