Hairdressers are being urged to enter the Fellowship’s Step Up and Shine competition, which offers the winner a bespoke education scholarship worth £2,500. Set up in the name of industry legend Christofer Mann, it is open to members and non-members of any age, level and skill set from anywhere in the country.

For a chance to win, stylists are invited to upload a one-minute video explaining why they love hairdressing and why they would make a great candidate for the scholarship onto the NHF’s website. The videos will be judged by a panel of experts and the winner will be announced at the Fellowship’s Presidents’ Night in London this April.

The recipient of The Christofer Mann Step-Up and Shine Scholarship will be a UK hairdresser who would not normally enter a competition but has a passion for education and a genuine desire to learn and improve his or her skills.  The selected individual will receive a bespoke education package worth £2,500, valid for one year and including expenses and a Mentor Meeting to help plan their year.

The winner will be assigned industry legend Debbie G as a mentor to help them choose their scholarship courses from an approved list of the best available in the industry and to plan their bespoke educational year.  A fund of £2,500 will be available for the year to include tuition fees, travel and overnight expenses and will be tailored to suit the winner and their chosen career path.

“I was so proud when Sophie was announced as the winner of this exciting scholarship, and it had been amazing watching how she has developed both professional and personally,” says Vicky Stevens, owner of Tops Hair Salon and Beauty, which won 2015’s Employer prize. “I really encouraged her to apply as I knew it would really benefit her as an individual, but what she bought back to the team has been incredible.”

She adds: “Sophie has been able to pass on the skills she has learnt and that is what makes this opportunity so great. The courses she has been able to attend have been tailored to what suits her and it has made it entirely bespoke.”

Meanwhile, Seven Ivy Hairdressing’s Ollie Vines, who won the Sassoon Scholarship in 2014, adds: “Hearing my name being announced as Step Up and Shine Winner was the best feeling! I had heard about the opportunity and was really excited to possibly have the opportunity to receive some amazing education bespoke to me. I was even more excited when I was chosen.”

He adds: “I got to learn from industry experts that I look up to and their knowledge was amazing. I was able to make the Scholarship bespoke to me, which really improved my confidence in aspects I wanted to develop. Since being part of this Scholarship I have been able to pass on my expertise to others in the salon, as well as hugely improving my confidence with my clients”

The closing date for 2016 entries is 31 January – don’t miss out.
