Hair Colour: Essential 5
In a time where it’s almost a fight to stay relevant, we asked the Managing Director at Ashleigh Kelly Hairdressing, Ashleigh Kelly, five ways you can keep on top of seasonal hair trends in order to stay at the forefront of client’s minds.
Staying true to yourself
I feel staying true to yourself is the main thing when it comes to keeping up with seasonal trends. Ask yourself ‘is this my style?’ If the answer is no, tweak it to suit your guest’s needs. You don’t need to be Picasso and paint hair on the floor to stay relevant, your work just needs to be clean and confident. Always do your very best to listen, not just listen but “hear” what your client is asking of you and if it’s realistic go for it. If it’s not then create a reasonable path for them and enjoy the journey together.
Social media
For me this is my secret weapon, follow people who inspire you, you don’t have time for anything less! It’s fine to copy techniques but always be organic in the way you do so. I love using stories and asking my followers whether they like certain styles via the poll feature on Instagram. It’s simple, free and effective. After this listen to the majority, follow those trends and start posting more of what’s being well-received on your socials. Remember – you’re creating content to target your ideal client.
Good brand support
Having a reliable and reputable brand to work alongside with will make the process of staying up to date with trends easier. Schwarzkopf Professional are always ahead of the game with trends as they review the catwalks of LFW and NYFW to name a few. They narrow down key trends, showcasing Essential Looks twice yearly which simplifies how we can use commercial looks in the salon. Every month we receive images from LWPR with captions for social media which is absolutely fool proof.
Upskilling/training
When choosing courses I always do my research on how my teams development will grow as it can be costly, keep it simple, what can you add to what you already know? Will this help target my ideal client? I think consistent education is the key, while sometimes we are only refreshing our minds on things we can already do, it’s a reminder that we can and need to do it to stay on trend.
Fashion weeks
I am part of the Schwarzkopf Collective Team, I’ve been privileged to work at LFW’s and PFW’s and never mind what’s going on behind the scenes, I love seeing how the models come in naturally. How they look on a normal day is where I take a lot of my inspiration from, the streets, every day looks, how can I take this miss match and make it my own. I always go back and discuss the looks I see with my wider team to make sure I put my ideas into other heads to really get the creative juices flowing; it provides great staff room chat!
