I initially trained with straight scissors; why should I consider an offset/ergonomic scissor? Offset or ergonomic scissors allow the arm and shoulder to be in a lower position, which reduces repetitive strain on the shoulder and wrist.
Why spend over £20 on scissors or thinning scissors when cheaper ones will work? Cheaper scissors are fine as a backup pair, but for consistent, accurate cutting techniques, choose a scissor that will deliver the skills you have learned and will last a lot longer than a cheap pair.
How frequently do my scissors require servicing? Scissors begin to dull from the first cut and should be serviced at least once a year, more if used frequently.
Should I use just any company to service my scissors? When a scissor is professionally sharpened, only the smallest amount of metal is removed to ensure that the scissor cuts properly and allows for many more services in the future. Very few sharpeners know how to do this or how to properly set the scissor edge back to its original standard.
Top 5 Tips for Maintaining Your Scissors
- An obvious tip is to avoid dropping your scissors on hard surfaces, as this can damage them and cause the blades to misalign or bend the tips. Also, take care when storing your scissors; open scissor blades in a draw can be easily damaged.
- Keep scissors dry to prevent stains, rust, and corrosive damage; always clean and oil every day.
- Only cut hair with your scissors, and remember that unwashed hair may contain sand and grit that can blunt your scissors edges.
- If you notice the hair folding or bending while cutting, the tension adjuster may be too loose; after adjustment, if it is still folding the hair, then your scissors may be ready for a service.
- Scissors and thinning scissors don’t last forever. If you take care of good-quality scissors, they could last 5 years or more. Unfortunately, we see many scissors sent to us for servicing every year that have been ruined by poor sharpening.
