After the death of her uncle to skin cancer, Glasgow entrepreneur Lisa Stewart made it her mission to create a safer alternative to tanning with UV.
Like most typical Scottish girls, I was not blessed with a natural tan, and unless I went abroad, my skin wasn’t used to being exposed to natural sunlight! Like many others, I chose to ignore the scary skin cancer warnings and used sunbeds throughout my teens and 20s to make myself look ‘healthy and tanned.’
Using self-tanning products was the last option because I felt that the products available at the time developed into an obviously fake, orange colour, went patchy after a couple of days and made me smell like a stale biscuit. I ignored the health warnings until I lost my uncle to skin cancer.
As I told more people what had happened to my uncle, more and more of my friends were admitting that they had moles removed and had scars from treatments received to attack the skin cancer cells that had been found after over-using sunbeds. I was shocked at how common this was but found that most people just hid their scars instead of being open about it. They all hated using fake tan from a bottle and would prefer to risk their health to get a more natural looking result.
I was determined to find a healthier alternative and so, along with some amazing industry experts, I designed & created the Star Tanning Brand.
STAR stands for Safe Tanning Avoids Risks. I essentially looked at every fake tan pet hate, and my team came up with a solution for it. It wasn’t always easy, but we took a risk together and trusted each other to come up with something unique!
