A class of her own
Some people are born educators – Liz Firth, owner of EMF Training would, as a child, line up her dolls and ‘teach’ them; taking care to explain things well!
“I had the most amazing learning experience for my level 2 & 3 Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy at Newark & Sherwood College, setting me up to be the best therapist I could be,” Liz told us. “It turned out hairdressing itself was, in the end, not really my thing!”
Liz’s career has taken her on many journeys along the way; starting as a toning table instructor, working on the counters in department stores, managing her own salon, and for a while working in the United States with a major UK beauty brand.
“I took a short time out of the beauty industry and opened a pet business with my husband, but my passion remained, and I opened a small salon above one of the pet shops,” said Liz. “Then an opportunity arose for me to join a training team on a very part-time basis and I loved it. This then spurred me on to seek out more part-time training posts.
“With encouragement from the people who know and love me the most I decided to fulfil my dream of opening my own training academy. It started in a small room in a business centre but within two months I had outgrown it. I moved to a bigger room but within six months had outgrown that, and so the growth continued to where we are now.”
When taking on staff Liz wanted people with the same work ethic, passion, sense of humour, and love of life that she has.
“My team now are all of the above, they are amazing and it’s important to me that they know I appreciate everything they do; all the extra effort they put in, often outside of working hours,” she said.
EMF Training in Barnsley now offer over 70 accredited Hair, Beauty and Nail courses and VTCT NVQs; a vast array of opportunities for people looking to join the profession or expand their business, and being a Dermalogica approved training school has taken their facial training to an entirely new level!
“The team of trainers I have working alongside me have their own specialist fields, meaning when you train with us you truly are getting the best of the best,” explained Liz. “The knowledge the girls have is outstanding, and more importantly they still work in the industry so don’t lose touch with reality. They know how difficult it can be out there to achieve your ambitions. Our courses always come with business building advice, helping you along the way with pricing, timings, and profit margins; something you do not always get taught in college.
“Passing on knowledge is so important, a good trainer isn’t always someone that can do a good set of lashes. It’s someone that get the information across to others to be an amazing lash technician.”
And more space at the new premises means that they have been able to expand their retail/wholesale section, and now are a distributor for CJP Nails, Pure Nails & Halo Gel Polish, Lashbase, Lash Fx, and many more.

“It may sound corny,” concluded Liz, “but I was given a couple of chances over the years, and without those I may not be where I am today, so I want to do the same for others.
“I have never wanted to work in any other industry and I love what I do, and after being crowned the English Hair & Beauty Awards ‘Training Academy of the Year’ in March this year, I finally felt that my achievements and hard work had been recognised.”
